Avernum 6 demo5/1/2023 And at 11 combat is still way too easy to even bother with evading. The city of Thorniara alone took me about 10 hours. At 7.5 hours I was level 11, finishing the Stewark area, the 3rd one (counting the island we played in the demo) out of 8-10 areas, depending how we count them. There is no way one can finish it in 15 hours while smelling the roses, so I think he got his prejudice from someone not too bright. While in 7.5 hours you manage to figure out whether you like a game or not, it seems that he started playing it having already made up his mind. I usually agree with with the RPS reviews, but this one sounded like some tard at f13 (or was it still waterthread at the time?) reviewing Horizons: clueless. I only played the demo but my impressions totally agree with this reviewer. I read the whole thing, plus the comments. But I liked it more than Risen and The Witcher.Īvenger wrote:Here is the Rock Paper Shotgun review. I think I even had more stuff to do and to think about in Avernum 6. Nothing to write home about, it wasn't Fallout 3 or an Elder Scrolls game, Two Worlds nor Divinity 2, just an average CRPG worth it since there is no other RPG in the backlog. Too bad they removed the anti-aliasing they used for screenshots and allegedly for press preview copies, because as soon as you look towards buildings or other man-made structures it all turns to some shitty pixel soup.Īll said it was en enjoyable experience. Graphics are beautiful, with the best weather and sunrise/dusk effects I have seen so far. The quests are different (most of them) and you don't get good gear on it either. The first island is different from the demo. It also makes all the unique and supposedly ultimate crafted weapons obsolete. This sword, even though it is rather weak damage wise, around 40 compared to others that are 60+, but it largely compensated by the healing. Since in Arcania, as in every other game, most of the AI balancing consists in giving mobs tons more HP than the player, receiving 20% of it back as HP is like an invulnerability spell. A bit later there will be another one, which name escapes me atm, that on every hit gives you 20% of the damage you have dealt as HP. Around 15-16 an orc will "give" you a 2-H sword named "The Boss". There are two weapons that will take you through most of the game. When you find them and get the ingredients you already have looted better stuff. I think I've seen every NPC and done all the quests, but didn't find many recipes. You then start to really need to do the evade rolls, and after 20 you do more avoiding than hitting.Ĭrafting is useless. No stunlocks, nor mob attacks that require 0.001 sec reflexes - something Piranha Bytes could learn from.Ĭombat was easy at first, until about level 15. No stupid boss fights in a closed arena without preparation, after like 10 mins of unskippable cutscenes no large fields that you can't walk on because there is a 1 meter fence - I'm looking at you Witcher. It was entertaining and, a rare occurrence, nothing has frustrated me. Tried to explore every corner, but am about 2/3 to 3/4 in the 4 "quests" for collectibles. I may have spent a couple of hours on the web with the game minimized, but not much more than this. The last save says 27.4 hours, Steam says 34.6 hours.
